About Steve

Steve is an experienced Chief Executive, Non-Executive Director, and Charity Trustee. He has years of experience in leadership and non-executive governance; strategy development and implementation; strategic finance; income generation; organisational turnaround; and strategic communications/PR.

Governance

Steve is an experienced Non-Executive Director. He served for four years as one of two independent co-opted members on the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel, scrutinising its £350 million budget, and is Chair of his local primary school, one of the largest in Sheffield.

He has also successfully developed a charity Board of Trustees and trading arm Board of Directors over many years, recruiting and inducting several new Trustees. He also played a central role in establishing and leading a joint venture company with four other charities.

Steve has:

  • Updated a charity’s Articles of Association and registered them with the Charity Commission;
  • Re-written a charity’s Code of Governance and Scheme of Delegation, including sub-committee Terms of Reference;
  • Regularly contributed to Local Authority meetings, both as a Member and as an Officer;
  • Developed a risk register which was described by an external assessor as “the best he has seen”;
  • Updated organisational vision, mission and values statements;
  • Successfully merged with/acquired other organisations twice;
  • Facilitated numerous Board planning days.

Senior Leadership

Steve is an experienced charity Chief Executive and, before that, was a senior manager in a £60m public sector body for eight years.

He is an expert in strategy development and implementation, restructuring, and building successful teams.

Steve has:

  • Developed strategies to transform income generation success and diversification;
  • Successfully managed a £1 million Heritage Lottery project to redevelop a Grade II listed building;
  • Carried out several staff restructures to reduce costs and organisational change programmes;
  • Led award-winning teams that are recognised for their service delivery excellence.

Financial strategy

Steve transformed the finances of a £1.5 million charity which was losing money, close to its minimum reserves levels, and highly dependent on a small number of expiring contracts. He can bring your charity:

  • Annual reports and accounts that are fully compliant with the Charity SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice)

Income generation

Steve wrote the successful grant aid bids and contract tenders which brought in over £500,000 of funding from a variety of sources, every year.

He also carried out all the fundraising to deliver a £1m capital project to restore two historic buildings, with £631,200 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and £315,000 from five other capital funders.

Communications

Steve is an award-winning communicator, and an Accredited Practitioner with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

He held communications leadership roles for 15 years, and was Chair of the national FirePRO network of Fire Service communicators.

Steve has:

  • Developed a communications team from scratch to, within eight years, be named the CIPR’s In-House Team of the Year in Yorkshire;
  • Designed and delivered legally-compliant statutory consultations which were resistant to Judicial Review;
  • Lobbied elected politicians with effective public affairs campaigns;
  • Won “Best Use of Social Media in a Crisis” at the UK Social Media Awards;
  • Edited the most viewed website in the Football League.
